FAQ

Logistics, Fees, & Insurance

  • Do you accept my insurance?

Mind and Body Medicine operates as an out-of-network provider to ensure that treatment decisions are driven by what is best for you, not by insurance company limitations. We provide you with a detailed receipt (a superbill) that you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement. We recommend checking your out-of-network benefits through Reimbursify or by directly calling your insurance provider to ask about your out-of-network benefits for psychiatric care.

Specialized Approach & Credentials

  • What is the difference between a Psychiatrist and a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)?

Both a Psychiatrist (MD/DO) and a PMHNP, like Dr. McDonald, are qualified to diagnose mental health conditions and prescribe and manage medication. Dr. McDonald holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) with advanced, specialized training in hormone-informed women's mental health care that goes beyond general psychiatry training.

  • What is Integrative Psychiatry?

Integrative Psychiatry is our whole-person approach. It combines the best of traditional psychiatric care (diagnostic evaluation, medication) with evidence-based complementary modalities like nutritional guidance, targeted supplements, and lifestyle interventions. This ensures we treat the root causes, not just the symptoms.

  • Do you prescribe Menopause Hormone Therapy (MHT)?

Yes. As a Menopause Society Certified Practitioner (MSCP), Dr. McDonald offers specialized evaluation and management of MHT. We integrate this expertise into your overall mental health plan when appropriate or offer it as a dedicated service.

  • What is Integrative Psychiatric Care?

Integrative Psychiatry is our definitive, whole-person approach. It intentionally blends modern psychiatric science (diagnosis, evidence-based medication) with functional medicine strategies. We consider all aspects that may be affecting your mental health—from lab results and nutrition to hormones and lifestyle—to ensure we address the root cause, not just the symptoms.

  • Do you only see women with hormone issues?

No. While we are Women's Mental Health Specialists and expertly treat hormone-related mood disorders (like PMDD and perimenopausal depression), we treat a wide range of conditions, including general anxiety, depression, insomnia, and PTSD/trauma. Our expertise is simply hormone-informed, offering a superior level of diagnostic clarity regardless of your primary concern.

  • Why should I choose an out-of-network provider?

Our commitment is to high-quality, evidence-based care that treats the whole person, without compromise. Insurance companies frequently limit the time a provider can spend with you and restrict your treatment options. Operating out-of-network is our commitment to you: ensuring our decisions are always guided by your needs, not by arbitrary insurance restrictions.

  • Can I still see my PCP or OB/GYN while in your care?

Absolutely. We frequently collaborate with your primary care provider or obstetrician/gynecologist to ensure seamless, coordinated care. Being trained in both psychiatry and medicine, Dr. McDonald is uniquely positioned to interpret your existing medical history and integrate her care plan with your other providers.

The Treatment Process

  • Do I need therapy (psychotherapy) while seeing Dr. McDonald?

While Dr. McDonald utilizes therapeutic techniques like motivational interviewing, she primarily focuses on psychiatric and integrative management. We strongly recommend that patients engage with a dedicated psychotherapist for weekly talk therapy to achieve the best, most comprehensive outcomes. We can provide referrals to trusted therapists.

  • How long will it take to feel better?

Healing is unique to every woman. Our goal is to create a precise, personalized plan to help you feel significant relief as quickly as possible. We focus on achieving lasting, holistic results through consistent, hormone-informed treatment adjustments and collaborative care.

  • What does a treatment plan include?

Your personalized plan may include Integrative Psychiatric Care (medication management, mind-body practices, psychotherapy, and motivational interviewing), Menopause Hormone Therapy (MHT), non-hormone replacement therapy, specific supplement recommendations, and comprehensive lifestyle optimization.

  • How often will we meet?

After your initial comprehensive intake, we typically meet monthly for the first 3–5 months until you are stable. Once stable, we shift to meeting every three months for focused Integrative Psychiatric Care visits. If your plan includes psychotherapy, we may meet weekly for a specific period (typically 12 weeks).

  • Do you see patients in person or only via telehealth?

We primarily conduct visits via secure telehealth for your ease and convenience, serving all women in Oregon and Idaho. We also offer in-person appointments in Boise, ID, by appointment only.
